CLASS 1: 9:00 AM- 10:30 AM

Julie Balzer: Easy Art Journal Lettering

Adding text to your art journal page is fun and super easy, and starts with using your own handwriting. I’ll show you ways to use your handwriting to create fancy letters and then add shadows to make whatever you write pop off the page.

Learn how to:
• Turn your own handwriting into cool letters unique to you.
• Make expressive words and text that liven up pages and layouts.
• Create lettering easily with a few simple tools.

CLASS 2: 11:00 AM- 12:30 PM

Dina Wakley: Random by Design

Do you want to achieve an expressive, random look in your art journals but have a hard time loosening up and letting go? There is an art to random, messy layers, and they’re not as intuitive as they look. We’ll go over my favorite methods for achieving these expressive layers, and I’ll show you how to combine art techniques in thoughtful ways to create interesting art in your journals.

Learn how to:
• Let go of stiff, boring pages that don’t express you.
• Make random feel right with great tips and tricks
• Use color effectively to make pages pop.

BREAK FOR LUNCH 12:30 PM-1:30 PM

Lunch voucher provided.

CLASS 3: 1:30 PM- 3:00 PM

Nathalie Kalbach: Tooling Around

Let’s tool around and make the most of your supplies! Use brayers, brushes, palette knives, stamps, and stencils and other inexpensive tools along with acrylic paints and media in different ways. Learn how to create unique and layered backgrounds in your art journal. Create dimension and texture by painting, scraping, stamping, stenciling and glazing. All techniques in this class can be used outside your art journal too—think mixed-media projects, canvases, and even paper crafting projects. The sky is the limit.

Learn how to:
• Get more use out of familiar and unfamiliar tools.
• Work with paints and mediums to create compelling pages.
• Use stamps in new ways to make layered backgrounds.

CLASS 4: 3:30 PM- 5:00 PM

Mary Beth Shaw: The Abstracted Art Journal.

We will first make several "parts" to use in our pages: tissue pages, stickers, tape, and more. We will then paint a page spread by using a stencil to guide our composition, and create interesting patterned focal points. Finally, neutral color and mark making will help provide a cohesive result.

Learn how to:
• Create page elements by hand, using familiar tools and materials.
• Incorporate stencils in unique and interesting ways.
• Use mark making to add drama and depth.
